CDU admission criteria

email to neurosurgery residents from Dr. Kaufmann:

"Please see the following guidelines for admission to the Mercy ED Clinical Decision Unit (CDU). This unit within the ED serves as an area where patients with subacute problems can be managed until a final decision is made regarding their disposition with the expectation that there is a high likelihood of discharge home. It is my understanding that the other hospitals within the system do not have such a model and it has created some misunderstandings about when to utilize this unit and when not. Attached is a guideline for the admission criteria to the CDU as formulated by the ED staff."

CDU Entry Criteria

  • Admission Criteria:
    • Anticipated overall LOS 6-24 hrs (CDU LOS 4-18 hrs)
    • High probability of discharge within 18 hours of placement into CDU
    • Focused Patient Care Goal
      • Extended diagnostic evaluation (e.g., chest pain, syncope, etc.)
      • Extended emergency treatment (e.g., asthma, dehydration, pain control)
      • Psychosocial needs (e.g., intoxication, social ‘admits’)
  • Exclusion Criteria
    • High Severity of Illness (e.g., unstable)
    • High Intensity of Treatment (e.g., vasoactive therapy, disruptive/self-harm pts)
    • Patients Meeting Inpatient Criteria
    • Age <15 years
    • Pregnant patients >23 weeks and pregnancy related complaints in patients >16 weeks gestation (OB consultation recommended for CDU-eligible pregnant patients 16-23 weeks)
    • Boarded Inpatients
    • ED patients with anticipated LOS <6 hrs
    • CMO patients
    • Bariatric Patients
